Walsh Takes Opener From Hillsdale 16-5

Box score: Walsh 16, Hillsdale 5

The Charger baseball team suffered a 16-5 loss at the hands of Walsh University Friday afternoon in the first game of their four-game weekend series. The teams are scheduled to play a nine-inning game starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by two seven-inning games starting at 1:00 Sunday.

Friday's was one of those games where everything Walsh hit seemed to find a hole somewhere, while the Hillsdale bats were unable to get on track, except for one inning.

Walsh sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning, taking a 5-0 lead on the Chargers. Hillsdale struck back with five of its own in the bottom of the second, with the aid of four Cavalier errors, to tie the game at 5. The fifth run of the rally came on a towering solo home run by senior Chris McDonald, his 11th of the season.

But those would be the last runs scored by the home team, as Walsh scored in every inning from the third to the seventh. The Cavaliers outhit the Chargers 22-9 in the game, which overcame five errors committed in the field.

Senior Luke Ortel notched his 96th and 97th hits of the season in the game, and reached base a total of four times for Hillsdale. Sophomore Alex Walts went 2-for-4, while freshman Colin Boerst, celebrating his 19th birthday, had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run.
