SUNDAY RECAP

The Tiffin University baseball team used a ninth-inning run to pull out a 4-3 win over Hillsdale College Sunday afternoon at Simpson Field, in the Chargers' home GLIAC finale of 2014.

Hillsdale missed out on a chance to climb into sixth place in the GLIAC in this game, but it will have more chances to do so next week. The Chargers head to Saginaw Valley State for a single game Wednesday, followed by a three-game weekend series at Lake Erie May 3-4.

Tiffin's Isaac Perry doubled to left with one out in the ninth to provide the winning run for Tiffin.

Pitching was top-notch for both teams, as there were just nine total hits between the teams. Sophomore Lucas Hamelink got the start, but a no decision for Hillsdale. In five innings on the mound, he allowed two runs and fanned five batters, yet another promising sign that the talented right-hander can help the Chargers in their playoff push in the season's final week.

Freshman Ethan Wiskur, another exciting prospect, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. His sixth double of the season helped spring Hillsdale to a 1-0 first inning lead.

SATURDAY RECAP

The final home weekend of the regular season started quietly, but finished much differently for the Hillsdale College baseball team.

The Chargers were blanked by Tiffin University 5-0 in the first game of their Saturday afternoon doubleheader, being held to just three hits. But Hillsdale bounced back with a 4-2 victory in the second game, putting its record at 15-29 overall and 13-15 in the GLIAC.

The two teams wrap up their weekend set at noon Sunday. Before the game, the Chargers will honor their six graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony, slated to begin at approximately 11:45 a.m.

In game one, senior starting pitcher Matthew Reck allowed just two earned runs, but the offense was unable to generate any offense, and the defense committed three errors in the field in the loss. Adam Ladzinski, Nolan Breymaier and Chris McDonald were the only players to get hits in the opener.

In game two, the team didn't wait long to scratch up the scoreboard, scoring once in the first and picking up three in the fourth inning, which is all starter Jake Lee needed to record his fifth win of the season.

Lee went six innings, with two strikeouts and just four hits allowed. Junior Dan Pochmara csame on to record his fifth save of the season, striking out the final three batters he faced, after the Dragons got the potential game-tying run to first base.

McDonald started the third-inning run with an RBI double that scored Michael O'Sullivan to knot up the game at 2. Sophomore Lincoln Reed followed with a two-run single, making up the difference in the final score.

Sophomore Tad Sobieszczanski went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. McDonald drew a walk, scored a run and drove one in.
