SUNDAY RECAP
April 28, 2013 - After a 2 hour, 45 minute rain delay, the Chargers and Pioneers finally wrapped up their weekend series, with Malone prevailing in 10 innings, 7-4 Sunday afternoon in Hillsdale.
The Chargers fall to 9-17 in the GLIAC and 16-24 overall with the loss. They will play their final home games of the season Wednesday afternoon aaginst Saginaw Valley State. The GLIAC doubleheader will start at 2 p.m.
The dreary conditions seemed to affect offense on both teams until the final innings. The Pioneers extended a 3-1 lead to 4-1 in the top of the ninth. Hillsdale then battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Freshman Zak Northrup continued his hot play at the plate since moving into the leadoff spot with a game-tying single to center field, scoring Luke Ortel to make it 4-4. Earlier in the inning, Connor Bartlett and Lincoln Reed each drove in runs for the Chargers.
However, Malone struck back for three runs in the top of the 10th, scoring on a combination of hits, errors and legging out fielder's choice plays.
Freshman Tad Sobieczszanski had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles while getting the start in the cleanup position. Ortel went 2-for-4 with a double.
SATURDAY RECAP
April 27, 2013 - The seven graduating seniors on the Hillsdale College baseball team were honored in a between-games ceremony on a glorious Saturday afternoon. Pitcher Kris Morris then made it an even more memorable day for himself and his teammates.
Morris got a richly deserved third win of the season with a complete-game outing that led the way for the Chargers' 3-1 win over Malone University in the second game of their GLIAC doubleheader at Simpson Field. The Pioneers topped Hillsdale 5-2 in the first game between the teams.
Hillsdale snapped a five-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap, and are now 16-23 overall and 9-17 in the GLIAC. The two teams will meet again at noon Sunday in a nine-inning contest.
Morris has been one of Hillsdale's most consistent pitchers all season, but has endured hard luck in many of his outings. His two most recent losses were by scores of 1-0. But Saturday, he got three runs from his offense and he took care of the rest, scattering six hits in his victory. With the seven innings logged, Morris moved up to second place on Hillsdale's all-time single-season top 10 list for innings pitched with 80.1. He is the second pitcher in school history to log at least 80 innings in a season, and he trails 2006 graduate Andy Lovell by four innings for first place on that list.
Freshman Zak Northrup batted leadoff in both games Saturday and made the most of his opportunity. In the two games, he went 3-for-6 with two runs batted in and one run scored, and stole two bases in the team's 3-1 win.
Sophomore Vinny Delicata had two hits in the nightcap and turned three 6-3 double plays. He played a strong defensive game at shortstop, and his quick hands and feet helped the Chargers get out of a number of Pioneer threats.
