Aprfil 21, 2013 - After being limited to just three runs in 14 innings of play Saturday, the offense of the Hillsdale College baseball team was more active Sunday. It just wasn't quite enough for a win.
The Chargers came back from a 5-2 deficit to tie Sunday's game with Findlay 5-5, only to fall in a frustrating 10-inning contest, 6-5 at Findlay, Ohio. Hillsdale is now 15-21 overall on the season, and will host Notre Dame College for a single, nine-inning game at 3 p.m. Monday.
Hillsdale got the pitching it needed - starter Lucas Hamelink and reliever Dan Pochmara didn't give up a single earned run in the game - but the team committed four errors, all of which allowed the opportunistic Oilers to finish off the three-game series sweep.
The Chargers led the game 2-0 into the fifth inning when Findlay came back. The Oilers scored once in the fifth and four times in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. But the Chargers answered immediately with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Michael O'Sullivan and Scott Rhodes opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Zak Northrup and Geordy Smith then followed with run-scoring hits to knot the game.
Pochmara threw three outstanding innings in relief, needing just 15 pitches to record nine outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. In the 10th, the Oilers drew a walk, reached on an error, then won the game with a double.
Northrup, Sean Bennett and Rhodes each had two hits in the game for the Chargers. All 10 of Hillsdale's hits in the game were singles.
Saturday Recap
April 20, 2013 - For the second time in 10 days, Hillsdale College senior pitcher Kris Morris was on the losing end of a 1-0 score Saturday afternoon.
Morris, one of the Chargers' top starting pitchers, turned in another good performance and got nothing to show for it, as Hillsdale lost both ends of a GLIAC doubleheader to the University of Findlay, 1-0 and 5-2 in Ohio. The teams will wrap up their three-game weekend series starting at noon Sunday.
Morris yielded just four hits and one run in the complete-game effort. Back on April 10, Morris lost a 1-0 decision at home to Northwood University. Hillsdale's offense managed just four hits, putting two runners on base over the final three innings. For the season, Morris' 2-8 record isn't pretty, but he has a 3.25 earned-run average, best among all the starting pitchers on the staff. He has received one or zero runs in five of his 11 starts on the season.
Senior Mike Vanchieri had two of Hillsdale's four hits in the opener, including a double.
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, when freshman Connor Bartlett produced the third of three consecutive singles, scoring Sean Bennett.
Findlay struck back right away, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, and tacked on more runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
Freshman Zak Northrup had a productive day at the plate for the Chargers, going 3-for-4, but never came around to score. Bartlett drove in both runs in the nightcap for Hillsdale.
