Chargers Blanked in Rainy Contest

Chargers Blanked in Rainy Contest

Game 1 box score - Northwood 1, Hillsdale 0

April 10, 2013 - It was a miserable day in Hillsdale Wednesday, as heavy rain and storms wiped out the second game of a scheduled GLIAC baseball doubleheader between Northwood University and Hillsdale College.

The first game started 75 minutes late, but was completed, and resulted in a 1-0 Timberwolves victory over the Chargers, in a game that took just 90 minutes to play. The second game will resume play, with Hillsdale ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second, April 17 at Northwood. The teams will then play their previously scheduled nine-inning game to wrap up their three-game season series.

The loss represented another tough-luck outing for senior pitcher Kris Morris, who turned in another strong effort, to no avail. He went all seven innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run, with three strikeouts and no walks. It was his sixth start of the season that saw him receive three or fewer runs of support.

Hillsdale's biggest threat came in the top of the first inning, when freshmen Luke Ortel and Michael O'Sullivan led off the inning with hits, putting runners on first and third with no outs. But Northwood came up with two huge defensive plays to pick both runners off base, effectively ending the scoring threat.

Those two hits, to lead off the first, turned out to be the only hits of the day for Hillsdale.
