March 30, 2013 - Back-to-back five-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings were enough fuel for the Tiffin University baseball team to secure a three-game sweep of Hillsdale College in Ohio Saturday.
Ten of the Dragons' 13 runs in the 13-7 win came in those two innings. Hillsdale is 10-11 on the season and 3-5 in the GLIAC, and will return home to host Ohio Dominican in a three-game series Tuesday and Wednesday.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Hillsdale battled back to take a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. But that's when the Dragons broke the game open, piling up 10 runs in two innings, never looking back.
Each team had 15 hits, but a big difference came in runners left on base, of which the Chargers had 11 in the ballgame.
Senior Mike Vanchieri had a big day at the plate with three hits and a run scored. Senior Brad Hayden had two hits, while sophomore Sean Bennett added two hits, two runs scored and one run batted in. Seven different players accounted for the seven RBI in the game for Hillsdale.
Sophomore Nolan Breymaier had a pinch-hit double as well.

March 29, 2013 - The Hillsdale College baseball team endured a difficult day Friday afternoon, losing a pair of GLIAC games to Tiffin University in Ohio.
The Dragons scored five first-inning runs en route to a 7-3 win in the first game, and ran away with a 14-2 decision in the second game. The teams will play a single nine-inning game starting at noon Saturday.
Hillsdale is now 10-10 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC.
The day started out promising enough - the Chargers put three runs on the Dragons in the top of the first inning of game one, jumping out to an early lead and intent on continuing its much-improved play this season. Freshman Connor Bartlett, who has a nine-game hitting streak going, delivered a two-run single to push Hillsdale into an early lead. Tiffin committed three errors in the inning.
But the Dragons wasted little time in wiping out that deficit, scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-3 lead, a lead it wouldn't lose again the rest of the day.
Bartlett is batting .500 during his current hitting streak, and was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the first game for the Chargers. Freshman Micharl O'Sullivan, who himself has a five-game hitting streak, also collected two hits in the opener.
Game two was all Tiffin from the get-go, as the Dragons again scored five times in the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Tiffin also made Hillsdale pay for its mistakes, pushing across five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-sided affair.
Bartlett and senior Brad Hayden each drove in a run in the second game for Hillsdale.
