McDonald's 11th-inning Heroics Lift Hillsdale Past St. Michael's

March 15, 2013 - During March Madness time, Hillsdale College freshman Chris McDonald decided to have a "one shining moment."

McDonald launched a walk-off home run to give the Chargers a 6-5 11-inning win over St. Michael's in West Palm Beach, Fla. Friday afternoon. In Friday's second game, Hillsdale lost to UMass-Lowell 9-3.

The team is back in action Saturday against 18th-ranked Florida Tech.

McDonald had two hits, including his heroic blast that gave Hillsdale its best 10-game record (7-3) in coach Paul Noce's 20-year career.

Sophomore Dan Pochmara, who has been lights-out as a relief pitcher this season, picked up his third win with three stellar innings of work. He relieved senior Kris Morris, who threw eight innings with just two earned runs allowed. He had two walks and two strikeouts, but ended up with the no-decision.

Senior Mike Vanchieri had two runs batted in and a stolen base, while freshmen Tad Sobieszczanki and Zak Northrup each hadf a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Vinny Delicata added two singles and scored a run for the Chargers.

In the second game of the day, freshman Luke Ortel set a career-high with four hits, and stole two bases. Sean Bennett and Brad Hayden each had two hits, while Delicata drove in a run. Sophomore Shane Armstrong took the loss on the mound.
