Baseball Drops First Game, Wins Darknes-Shortened Contest

The Warriors won game two 11-6 before the game was called after six innings/

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (24-13, 14-6 GLIAC) attempted to play two games at Hillsdale (19-20, 12-12 GLIAC) on Wednesday but a weather delay forced game two to run long and was called due to darkness.  The Warriors were blitzed in game one and lost 15-5 before WSU won game two 11-6 in six innings before the contest was called due to darkness.

GAME ONE (L, 5-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- WSU scored three runs on two hits in the top of the first inning.  With two outs, Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) drew back-to-back walks before Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) doubled home two runs.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) continued the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.  However, the Chargers were quick to answer and tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits and an error.

- Hillsdale loaded the bases in the second inning and a three-run double plus WSU's second error gave the Chargers a 7-3 advantage.  The big inning continued for HC with a three-run home run and a two-run home run to extend the lead to 12-3.  The Chargers added a run in the bottom of the third inning to push lead to 13-3.  Another two-run home run in the fifth inning gave HC a 12-run lead, 15-3.

- Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a two-run home run over the wall in center field in the sixth inning for WSU's fourth and fifth runs of the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) went 2-for-3, while Harms and Conti both drove in two runs apiece.

ON THE MOUND
- Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (2-3) started and allowed 10 runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks before Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out four batters.

GAME TWO (11-6 / 6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Harms hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give WSU a 1-0 lead but Hillsdale answered with a run on two hits to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.  After a weather delay between the first and second innings, the Chargers scored four runs on four hits and a WSU error to take a 5-1 lead.

- Following a leadoff double by Baldwin and a single from Harms, Conti cut the deficit to three at 5-2 with an RBI groundout.  Later in the fourth inning, a ground-rule double from Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) pulled the Warriors with two runs, 5-3.  The Green & Gold tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning as both Harms and Conti notched RBIs.

- A run for HC in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the home dugout the lead, 6-5.  WSU exploded for six runs in the sixth inning powered by three hits to take an 11-6 lead.  The game was halted in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness and it was determined that the game be reverted back to last full inning, which was the sixth.

AT THE PLATE
- Conti finished with five RBI, while Harms collected four RBI to go with his 3-for-4 performance.

ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) started and allowed an earned run before the weather delay.  Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) replaced Brown and allowed three earned runs in his inning of work before Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) tossed a scoreless inning.  Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (1-0) worked two innings and allowed an unearned run, while striking out four batters to collect his first victory of the season.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will begin a four-game series at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
