October weather could not have been nicer! We want to thank all those who came out to shoot and enjoy the fall colors. The Hillsdale Collegiate Fall Invitational on October 21 was a great success. It was a treat to have so many parents and students stop out for Parents Weekend as well. Our new membership program has grown beyond expectations—thank you for supporting the shooting sports at Hillsdale! Make sure to take advantage of the remaining fall weather, and check in with us if you’re planning to come out and shoot during the winter months.
I was blessed to be able to watch the team shoot at the SCTP National College Championship in Marengo, Ohio this past weekend. Hillsdale College Shotgun Team members make an excellent impression wherever they go! Everyone speaks highly of them, and they are in good hands with Coaches Mike Carl and Adam Burlew. We have four graduating seniors this year. Jordan Hintz, Kie Kababik, and Drew Lieske will graduate in the Spring, and Ian Dupre graduates this December. I first met Ian and his older brother AJ several years ago while they were still attending Culver Military Academy in Indiana. The two traveled together on the weekends to various ATA Trap shoots. God in His Providence allowed our paths to cross one day at a small club shoot in Sturgis, Michigan. It did not take long for me to recognize that both of these young men were outstanding individuals!
I was reminded of something this weekend while watching Ian shoot. In my kitchen, I have a little proverb: “Failure is not falling down…It is not getting up after you have fallen.” In the shooting sports, success is often measured by perfection. That is a difficult aspiration and challenge to achieve. Watching individuals such as Ian, Jordan, Kie, and Drew aspire to a level of perfection is a rare opportunity. It has been a blessing to have these fine young men at Hillsdale College. Thank you to all who have supported the shooting sports here, giving these students the chance to chase their dreams while receiving the best education in the country. Thank you to the parents I spoke with this weekend for their unending support. We wish Ian the best as he continues to pursue his Olympic dream. We’re proud of the great man and exceptional shooter he has become.

Charger Spotlight | Rylan Meares
Junior Rylan Meares started shooting his sophomore year of high school. He is a Financial Management major at Hillsdale and has been on the shotgun team for three years. During that time, Rylan has learned “the importance of humility.” He says, “Seek help from those who are better at certain things than you. I previously had difficulty asking for help on targets or even on assignments. That feeling has passed with time as I realize people here at Hillsdale just want me to do well in either shooting or academics.” Rylan’s favorite memory with the team was this past ACUI Nationals, particularly, “Collectively crushing the trap event to win the Division 3 Title because it had been close all week and we knew we needed to perform on the final day to seal the win.” After graduation, Rylan plans to complete paramedic school and then pursue a paid city medic or fire role. His ideal location would be the Nashville Fire Department. “I hope to eventually use my shooting experience to at least give me a clue into the firearm processes pertinent to my career choices.” Being a student athlete is truly a balancing act, but the Hillsdale motto is “Strength Rejoices in the Challenge.” For Rylan, virtus tentamine gaudet means “Pursuing and enjoying the betterment process, and displaying some grit as you do so.”
